What is Chow Mein and its Types?
Chow mein are Chinese stir-fried noodles with vegetables and sometimes meat or tofu; the name is a romanization of the Taishanese chāu-mèn.
The dish is popular throughout the Chinese diaspora and appears on the menus of most Chinese restaurants abroad. It is particularly popular in India, the UK, Nepal and the US.
In general, the term chowmein refers to fried noodles. There are mainly two types of Chow mein you can enjoy.
- Crisp chow mein: When making crisp chow mein, the noodles are pressed flat while frying, creating a pancake-like dish. Any additional ingredients and sauces are layered on top of the noodle pancake.
- Steamed chow mein: In steamed chowmein, the noodles are initially boiled in water, then stir-fried while being tossed with additional ingredients like vegetables or meat and coated in a light sauce.

Street Style Chowmein Recipe | How to make Street Style Chowmein | Chow Mein Recipe
Materials
- 10 cup Water
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1 pack Hakka Noodles
- 2 tbsp Oil
- 10 cloves Chopped Garlic
- 1 inch Chopped Ginger
- 3 Slit Green Chills
- 1 Sliced Onion
- 1 cup Cabbage
- 1/2 cup Sliced Carrot
- 1/2 cup Sliced Capsicum
- Spring Onion
- 1 tbsp Red Chili Sauce
- 1 tbsp Green Chili Sauce
- 1 tsp Soya Sauce
- 1 tbsp Tomato Ketchup
- 1/2 tbsp Salt
- 1/2 tsp Pepper Powder
Instructions
- To make amazing street style Chowmein Noodle, first place a pan on flame and add 1.5-litre water to it and boil.
- After bubbles appear, add 1 tsp of salt, 1 pack of Hakka noodles, and boil until 80% for 2-3 minutes.
- When the noodles are separated, turn off the flame and drain the water.
- After draining the hot water, wash it with normal water to stop overcooking.
- When all the water is drained from the noodles, add 1 tsp of oil and toss the noodles well.
- Now, place a pan on flame, add 2 tbsp of oil, and heat it on high flame.
- After the oil is hot, add 10 chopped garlic cloves, 1-inch grated ginger, 3 slits green chilli, and saute well.
- After some time, add 1 sliced onion and saute well on high flame until onion turns translucent.
- Now add 1 cup of chopped cabbage, 1/2 sliced carrot, 1.2 cups sliced capsicum, spring onion greens, mix well, and cook for 1 minute.
- After 1 minute, add 1 tbsp of red chilli sauce, 1 tbsp of green chilli sauce, 1 tsp of soya sauce, 1 tbsp of tomato ketchup and mix everything well.
- Now add 1 tsp of salt, 1/2 tsp of pepper powder and mix well.
- After 1 minute, add boiled noodles into the pan, mix well, and toss cook for 2 minutes.
- After 2 minutes, turn off the flame and garnish it with spring onion greens.
- Now your Veg Chow mein is completely ready, and you can enjoy it.
